Waist training is one of the newest fitness trends perpetuated by celebrities with the aim of developing a curvy body and smaller waist line. But, how safe is it and does it really work? Why do celebrities keep doing it?

The Kardashian-Jenner Sisters

Four of the famous reality TV sisters - Kim, Kourtney, Khloe and Kylie - have been seen posting photos of themselves on their social media accounts wearing corsets or waist-training contraptions. Khloe believes it helps keep her waist "snatched" and perfects her body posture. "Once you try it, you will become obsessed!" she said, according to Entertainment Tonight.

Jessica Alba

The mother of two admitted to wearing a double corset or cincher for three months along with diet and exercise in an attempt to return to her pre-pregnancy figure. But, while she said that it was worth the effort, she described the experience as "brutal," per Shape.

Lily James

The star of "Cinderella" had a very obvious slim waist in the movie and it wasn't Photoshopped or done with CGI; it was the real deal. "I couldn't untie the corset. So if you ate food it didn't really digest properly and I'd be burping all afternoon," she said, per USA Today. She had an unpleasant experience waist training for the role.

Gwyneth Paltrow

Daily Mail reported the actress has the help of a "body whisperer" Lauren Roxburgh for her core and waist workouts, but she has been speculated to wear corsets or cinchers too, as mentioned in Shape.

Lindsay Lohan

The former Disney star also jumped the waist training bandwagon, however her photos have been slammed by followers who said these were altered, per another Daily Mail report.

The Dangers of Waist Training

Meanwhile, doctors advise the fad has many health risks like crushing or bruising internal organs, development of acid reflux, blood clots and increased pressure to the heart, per Fox 6 Now. "The waist is never going to get any smaller unless we reduce the fat. The only way we're going to reduce the fat is through diet and exercise," said personal trainer Carla White in the report.

A tightly-squeezed contraption on the waist can decrease the body's core's strength and the corset might also cause back acne from the constant sweating, per Health. "In my opinion, this is complete nonsense," said Dr. Caroline Apovian in the report. "People are always looking for a way to cheat or a quick fix to fitness, and the answer is there isn't one."
