For the longest time, red wine benefits to the health of individuals have sparked many debates among medical experts. While some of these benefits are too good to be true, a few such as the presence of polyphenols, has actually been proven to reduce the risk of chronic disease development. Furthermore, a new study has revealed that an occasional red wine glass during dinner may be good for people suffering from diabetes.

Reuters reports that based on the study conducted at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel, people who drank a glass of red wine together with a well-balanced diet has improved levels of HDL or “good cholesterol” in the body and has even help control blood glucose. However, due to its controversial nature, the researchers warn the public to take caution when interpreting the results.

Professor Iris Shai, the senior author of the study, explains that while their findings show how red wine can affect the body, it is best to be followed-up with careful medical assessment and will still depend on doctors if they will recommend it to their patients. Moderate alcohol use has been the subject of many health-related studies but doctors are still adamant to include it in their consultation because alcohol intake remains to be questionable and uncouth when it comes to the role it plays in human health and nutrition. Here's a guide on how to make wine.

The Medical Daily adds that for the study, the researchers have observed more than 200 adults between the ages of 40 to 75 for two years who are known to be suffering from type 2 diabetes. The participants were asked to abstain from drinking alcohol, which meant they only drank alcohol once in a week and were asked to follow a sort of Mediterranean diet.

After analyzing the data, they collected, which included demographics, lifestyle, medications and the like, most of the participants showed improvement in their health, particularly their cholesterol and blood sugar levels. What more, the participants were also noted to have improved sleeping habits. These findings made the researchers conclude that red wine have better health benefits than other wine or even mineral water.

Further research is requested by the researchers to fully understand how red wine is able to aid better in terms of cardiovascular protection than white wine, Medical News Today writes. The phenol content in wine seems to be the key player in the study, but genes and length of time may also be important.

The study was published in the Annals of Internal Medicine this month.
