Upon the release of "Resident Evil 4" in 2005, the video game series from Japanese developer and publisher Capcom was on the cusp of transitioning into more of a third-person shooting and high-octane action game departing from a mere horror-survival game. This move has been a double-edged sword for the media franchise.

While some gaming enthusiasts appreciate the recent installments' focus on the shooting gameplay and weaponry, some of the purist and loyal fans rue that the game may have lost its original appeal and true character in exchange for the goal to keep up with the more popular action games these days.

And, the upcoming release of the "Resident Evil 7" may prove to be a good indication of how huge the reception of the gaming public for the Resident Evil series moving forward. Although, the development was already confirmed, the release of the video game is still yet to be revealed.

Meanwhile, there were rumors going around that this latest game in the survival horror franchise could come with Virtual Reality (VR) compatibility, according to a Gazette Dubai report. This is a welcome development for a lot of fans because incorporating VR can only enhance the horror factor of the game, which could be a good response to critics saying that the fear factor of the recent RE games have waned as compared to its earlier title releases.

There was also an indication that the upcoming RE installment could be built based on the Unreal Engine 4, which was also the same technology used in the development of games like "Kingdom Hearts 3" and "Shunmue 3," wrote DailySun Knoxville. As of now, Capcom is still mum on the details of the "Resident Evil 7" and nothing is cast in stone as of yet.

Unreal Engine 4 is a game engine that provides a technological platform for the creation and development of various advanced graphics and software applications. Some developers, for instance make use of these game engines to create new video games for different gaming consoles, smartphones and PCs.

The Unreal Engine first came about when Epic Games CEO and founder Tim Sweeney started building an editor for building 3D games in his basement back in the early 90s, according to Popular Mechanics. The engine was, eventually, built around this editor and after almost two decades, the technology of the Unreal Engine is now licensed by hundreds of developers to power some of the most popular games on PCs and video game consoles.
