If you are an automaker trying to get a slice of the lead at one of the most competitive sections that is the midsize sedan market, you just have to really put your best foot forward and deliver. General Motors is banking on its new and fully-redesigned 2016 Chevrolet Malibu to take them to greater heights. And, it seems like all their hard work is paying off.

The 2016 Chevrolet Malibu was named Car of the Year by the Detroit Free Press. "The sleek 2016 model rewrites that story with value, looks and features that match the finest family sedans," wrote Detroit Free Press.

The new Chevy, along with the Volvo XC90, which was named the Truck of the Year, will be formally recognized at the upcoming North American International Auto Show on Jan. 11. Meanwhile, here are 5 reasons why the Malibu is worthy of such distinction.

Impressive New Exterior Design

Chevrolet call it the style with a purpose. Last redesigned three years ago, the new Malibu now sports a more striking outside finish that will surely stand out. "Malibu brings an unexpected sense of drama to everyday driving," the automaker says.

"Windswept body lines and an agile stance give this midsize car a sleek new look while helping to provide a surprisingly sporty ride. And with bright and eye-catching available LED daytime running lamps and available LED taillamps, Malibu offers the perfect blend of form and function."

More Spacious

The redesign of the 2016 Malibu goes as far as the inside apart from the exteriors. One of the major complaints from the predecessor is its cramped interior space. Now, the new Chevrolet sedan was designed to be longer and lower, says The Intelligencer.

The wheelbase specs was stretched by close to 4 inches, translating to a 2.3 inches of overall length increase. But, it will be the backseat passengers who will really benefit with its 1.3 additional inches of rear-seat legroom.

Efficient Drivetrain

The 2016 Malibu is powered by a new standard turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine ditching. Although, it gives up 36 horsepower compared to the previous 2.5-liter base engine, its turbocharged property gives it suitable low-rpm oomph and improved fuel economy, according to Edmunds.

The more premium engine option, the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, comes with a new eight-speed automatic transmission for improved fuel economy. Fuel-saving features include a
Variable Valve Timing, Direct Injection, and Automatic Stop/Start that delivers 37 MPG highway.

Improved tech and Infotainment System

The 2016 Malibu now features a seven- or eight-inch MyLink connectivity, with Apple CarPlay compatibility for both of these systems and Android Auto for the smaller one, 4G LTE connectivity and a rearview camera system, The Car Connection noted in its review.

Safety Features

For the safety of the driver and passengers, the new Malibu is equipped with Lane Keep Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Front Parking Assist, Front Automatic Braking and Front Pedestrian Braking. It also has 10 standard airbags and a high-strength steel safety cage for protection in case of collision.

As for price and release date, the new Chevy sedan is now available in the U.S. with the 1.5-liter variant comes at a starting price of $22,500, while the 2.0-liter starts at $29,495.
