While many are still wondering why Luke Skywalker blankly stared at Rey while she was handing his lightsaber to him, rumor has it that Jedi master George Lucas might take the helm for “Star Wars Episode 9.”

The rumor is the product of a petition made to ask Disney to let Lucas direct the final episode for the current trilogy.

Currently, the trilogy started by J.J. Abrams' blockbuster “Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens.” already has a list of directors, Movie Pilot reported. Director Rian Johnson (“Looper”) has already been hired For “Episode 8,” while Colin Trevorrow (“Jurassic World”) has been named as the director for “Episode 9.”

The petition, hosted by Change.org, was made by a Brazilian named Yuri Luiz.

“We have no problem with Colin Trevorrow, but he's not the right guy to direct Star Wars Episode IX,” wrote Luiz. “George Lucas as director of Episode IX would be the perfect way to end this new trilogy and make an epic farewell between the Father of Star Wars and the whole universe of the galaxy far, far away .... “

“We would like to see him again involved with the franchise,” Luiz added.

Currently, more than 16,000 have signed up for the petition, quite far from the goal of 25,000 signatures. Should Disney give way, many fans will be pleased. However, it might be unlikely, according to reports.

It is known that, in 2012, Lucas sold his company, Lucasfilm, to Disney for $4 billion. At that time, he wanted a younger, newer generation to take the lead in producing “Star Wars” in the hopes that they will bring something new and fresh to the already epic events that are happening in a galaxy far, far away.

In addition to that, Lucas has already made it clear that, by selling the company and its intellectual properties to Disney, he has passed the torch and is done with the franchise, Slashfilm reported.

And though Disney didn't completely ban Lucas from the creative process of making the films, it is reported that their ideas in regards to the franchise didn't go together. As such, Lucas has completely left the “Star Wars” franchise into Disney's hands.

Despite Lucas not having to play a part in the new trilogy, “The Force Awakens” was still able to garner a massive $1.3 billion in ticket sales, surpassing “Jurassic World” to be the third highest-grossing movie to date, ABC News reported.
