For many years, people have been taught to believe of what is healthy and what is not especially when it comes to food. There are certain foods that were promoted as good for the body but will turn out to be unhealthy when professionals do a thorough study about them. Smoothie is one of the most popular refreshing drinks out there and, while many believe that this thick beverage is healthy, the experts disagree.

People may think that because they are made out of fresh fruits or vegetables, smoothies can already help with their diet. However, new study confirms that regular consumption of smoothies is not only bad for the health as it can also ruin a diet program.

According to a report by NEWS, Heart Foundation's Roni Beauchamp said that "consistent consumption of these drinks will lead to weight gain which leads to overweight and obesity."

That is really not something anybody would want to hear especially that most fitness gyms sell these drinks and perceive them as a good alternative for sweetened beverages. What people don't realize is, most of these smoothies have more sugar content than the regular bottle of soda.

Several cold drinks included in the menu of the top food chains were evaluated for their sugar, fat and energy content by LiveLighter, an anti-obesity campaign.

Smoothies from popular food outlets such as Gloria Jeans, Hungry Jacks, McDonalds, KFC, Boost Juice and Jamaica Blue were also part of the experiment. They found out that the popular beverage has more kilojoules than a regular Big Mac burger.

Libby Babet, a Health and Fitness Expert, said that people must be aware of what they consume because it may have more sugar content than what they know.

According a to a report by WebMD, a lot of people who drink this popular beverage do not notice that smoothies contain ingredients that are not necessarily good for the health such as peanut butter, chocolate, flavored syrup and more. And because people are told that smoothies are healthy, they tend to order them in large size cups, which make the sugar level even higher.

However, according to the medical news outlet, if people find it hard to give up smoothies from their daily routine, they should try making them at home. In that way, they have complete control over the ingredients. The secret is to keep it simple. Fresh fruits, non-fat milk, plain yogurt and ice will already make a scrumptious smoothie drink without compromising your health.
