One of the main proponents of the Negative Calorie Diet is celebrity chef Rocco DiSpirito who claims that he was able to maintain his 50-pound weight loss because of this diet plan that advocates the intake of nutritious and delicious foods while losing up to 10 pounds in 10 days, according to the Celebrity Health and Fitness.

DiSpirito claims that by eating negative calorie foods, which aid in fat burning and the speed up of metabolism, a person can achieve faster weight loss to go along with the slowing down of aging.

"These whole foods are packed with fiber, so not only do you tend to eat smaller portions of them naturally, but you also stay fuller, longer," Rocco wrote in his book, "The Negative Calorie Diet."

"Some even offer what is known as a 'thermogenic effect,' effectively boosting your metabolism to increase the rate at which your body burns energy. And you can eat as much of them as you want!" he added.

According to the Mayo Clinic, those who adhere with the diet believe that these negative-calorie foods help in weight loss as such foods, they claim, take a lot more energy to digest as compared to the number of calories it contains. The negative-calorie foods include some vegetables and fruits.

One vegetable that is usually mentioned when talking about the negative-calorie foods is the celery. Because of its high water and fiber content, the proponents claim that celery allows for more burning of calories compared to how much it contains.

While it may vary depending on the version of the diet, some of the negative calorie fruits and vegetables, which are considered generally fibrous, are asparagus, lettuce, broccoli, green cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, apples, blueberries, cantaloupes, and cranberries, according to The Diet Channel.

In this diet, there are no such thing as portion controlling the intake of these negative calorie fruits and vegetables. The proponents believe that you can achieve weight loss no matter how much of them you consume.

For those who are planning to try the diet, it is advisable to do so under the supervision of a physician. While the proponents are waxing poetic about the fast weight loss effect brought about by the diet, some experts believe that it may just be too drastic and unhealthy.

"Following extreme diets that promote eating only a few foods can cause you to miss out on important nutrients. The key to successful weight loss is adopting a healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet and regular exercise," the Mayo Clinic also cautioned.
