Stefan Salvatore has gone through so much in the course of seven seasons on "The Vampire Diaries," but the challenges seem to keep coming his way. In fact, he's currently on the run and will soon find himself in "The Originals", in a crossover that fans have been dying to see.

Variety reports that show creator Julie Plec admitted to wanting to do a crossover for some time now, but was hesitant in rushing into it because they did not want to do the said crossover just for "cross-pollinating" the two series. However, Plec shared that a light bulb went off in the writers' room when they realized that the only place Stefan would be safe is in St. James Infirmary, where no magic can work. Plec reveals that the crossover will be carried out in two different episodes, one for "The Vampire Diaries" and one for "The Originals."

"The crossover was born out Stefan needing a place to escape," Plec told TVLine. "He’s on the run. He needs to go somewhere where magic can’t find him, and we realized he can go to New Orleans where there’s that bar where magic doesn’t work."

While the initial plan was to have Stefan enter the world of "The Originals," Joseph Morgan, who plays Niklaus Mikaelson, seemed interested in going back to his roots in "The Vampire Diaries" as well.

"Joe said, ‘I’ll happily do it on 'The Vampire Diaries', but can we do this on 'The Originals,' too?’ We said, ‘If we can come up with something good, absolutely,’ and then we realized we have the perfect storyline already happening: the sire line and the war [between] all the trinity, and the prophecy saying that one of these Originals will die or all of them will fall," Plec explained. "The fear of that impacts Stefan directly, and so he sticks around for an Originals episode to participate in the latest dilemma to come out of that situation."

Plec also hinted that the crossover may also involve Caroline, who is currently with Stefan, in some way or another. As for the future of "The Vampire Diaries", which is currently in its seventh season minus one of their main characters, Elena, previously played by Nina Dobrev, Plec is positive that the future is bright for the series.

In fact, E! News reports that Plec credits stars Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley for the massive success of the show and that as long as they were willing to "keep telling the story", then "I won't walk away from telling the story."

"The Vampire Diaries" returns to television on Jan. 29 at 8 p.m. and "The Originals" will be back on the same day at 9 p.m., on The CW.
