3D Mammogram finds more invasive breast cancers while cutting down callbacks

One of the dreaded diseases in the world is breast cancer. It begins with a tumor that grows abnormally in the breast tissue. When not diagnosed, this tumor will eventually metastasize or spread its way to different parts of the body and life expectancy will drop and eventually brings death to the victim.

As worldwide awareness is raising, technological breakthroughs are also even more upgrading. Experts developed a way to augment the survivability of the breast cancer patients by detecting early signs of breast cancer. For years, the use of mammography to diagnose breast cancer is very much useful.

Mammogram is the image from the mammography use to study breast tumors. From this, doctors find their ways to look at the state of the patient's breast by not doing any invasive procedures yet.

2D mammogram

The 2D mammogram is a conventional mammogram that captures 2D images of the breast tumor. However, Dr. Edward Evantash of OB/GYN and Medical Director of Hologic Inc. said, that the accuracy of this procedure is low.

This is in relation to the study results published by Hologic, Inc. Factors that affects this issue involved in the density of the breast which makes it hard for it to capture the image of the tumor and thus, promoting higher anxiety issues to the patient and a high chance to be recalled for another test.

3D mammogram

The 3D mammogram, on the other hand, came to exist to make diagnostics more accurate. Whether the subject has an entirely flat to a high-density breast, this imaging procedure does the work perfectly.

It cuts through the image in a 3-dimensional precision which medical experts can see the total picture of the breast tumor and so, it makes diagnosis more accurate.

 In an editorial in the Journal of the American Medical Association, Dr. Etta Pisano of the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, said, "We found that 3D mammography really does help doctors find more invasive breast cancers while cutting down callbacks.

Also, this statement concludes that unnecessary biopsies and other test procedures are no longer needed and thus reduces anxiety of the patient.
