Mortal Kombat, an acclaimed fantasy fighting game in the 90's once made into a film, is brought back into life again. With a new cast and additional characters for the movie plus visual effects, Director Simon McQuoid, pulls to reboot the new Mortal Kombat movie in 2017.

A couple of weeks ago, McQuoid, who is best known for directing commercials, was tapped to direct the film.

According to Geek, James Wan, who will direct Aquaman and best known for his "Saw" franchise and "The Conjuring," is also producing the project for New Line Cinema.

Wan told IGN back in August that he is not going to rush into production. He also added, "The key here is to try and do it right. So, right now, we are just trying to take our time to make sure it is heading in the right direction. And I think that is more important than trying to rush through it and pump up something that no one else likes."

Mortal Kombat originated in a fantasy martial arts video game. Because of its stunning gameplays and visual effects and story, it was made into a movie.

"Mortal Kombat: The Journey Begins" (April 11, 1995), directed by Paul Anderson, hit the no. 1 at the weekend box office at USD 23.2 million, and earned an estimated USD 122 million worldwide. It's currently the fifth highest-grossing video game adaptation ever released.

However, the sequel did not make it through to be a blockbuster film. Directed by John R. Leonetti, "Mortal Kombat: Annihilation" critically panned and underperformed at the box-office that resulted in the cancellation of the third installment.

After many years, Mortal Kombat resurfaced in the form of the short film "Mortal Kombat: Rebirth" in 2010. Directed by Kevin Tacheron, the film was a realistic reimagining of the world in the games that toned downed most of the fantastical elements.

Tacheron was brought on board to direct the full-length movie but, he left the project, and thus, it evolved into what would become the Mortal Kombat: Legacy web series.

More details are yet to be released for the upcoming movie. But rumors for the new cast was speculated.
