Britain's biggest pop star of the 1980's, George Michael dies at the age of 53 leaving behind a legendary career. Born in Finchley, North London as Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou, Michael was one of the most influential solo artist of his times.

Michael is said to have died peacefully at home. BBC reports that Thames Valley police is treating the death unexplained but not suspicious and further updates will only be possible after the post-mortem reports come out.

Michael's publicist released a statement saying "It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period. The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage."

With natural good looks and god gifted talent as singer, songwriter and music producer, George Michael went on to be an iconic performer. Be it his albums or stage shows, it was always sold out. Michael started his career with his school friend Andrew Ridgeley in Wham but soon after the duo fell apart over creative differences and Michael went solo with the hit "Faith" followed by "Listen Without Prejudice" Vol 1.

"Last Christmas", "Before You Go", "Wake Me Up" and "Careless Whisper" sold over 100 million albums in a career spanning almost four decades. However his issues with sexuality and drugs kept him entangled in social and legal battles. He was arrested in California in 1998 for engaging in a lewd act which brought his homosexuality in public domain. Drug addiction and legal battles took a toll on his rising career graph.

According to The Sun, Just before his death Michael had secretly met his old love Kenny Goss after their painful split. The pair lived together for 13 year and the split resulted in severe trauma for Michael who was admitted in a Switzerland rehab.

A close friend told The Sun "George and Kenny are back spending time together again and it's an exciting time for those of us who have been so worried over the last few years." Reportedly the pair had rekindled their friendship and there was some hope for the revival of their relationship but unfortunately that was the end of it.

It is sad that the "Last Christmas" singer chose this Christmas as his last but for his millions of fans he will continue to be the "Careless Whisper" that he was.
