Harry Potter Actor John Hurt Dies At 77

The legendary veteran actor John Hurt passed away on Friday at the age of 77. He had played the role of Garrick Ollivander in the Harry Potter franchise.  He was battling pancreatic cancer. In a career spanning over six decades, John Hurt played several memorable roles. He had also been nominated for Oscar twice.

The Daily Mail reported that the British actor John Hurt is survived by his wife Anwen Rees-Myers and sons - Sasha and Nick. Born in Derbyshire, UK, Hurt had starred in several successful films like "Midnight Express", "Alien", "Tinker Soldier Spy", and "The Elephant Man".

Recently, he was part of the biopic "Jackie" that has received three Oscar 2017 nominations at the 89th Academy Awards. Hurt played the role of Father Richard McSorley in the movie "Jackie", which is based on the life of erstwhile U.S. President John F. Kennedy's wife.

According to the BBC, Sir John Hurt was one of Britain's best-known and most versatile actors. Born on Jan. 22, 1940 in Derbyshire, UK, he was a son of a vicar. Reportedly, he had a lonely childhood until he was enrolled in a boarding school in Lincoln. He dropped out of the art college to audition successfully for the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.

Later, he shared that he was so hungry that day that he could hardly deliver his lines. John Hurt took an instinctive approach to his craft. He believed that method acting was for people with no imagination.

The beloved Garrick Ollivander of Harry Potter, John Hurt was knighted in July 2015. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in summer that year. He signed up for the West End production "The Entertainer" but pulled out later because of his doctor's advice. His death was confirmed by his agent Charles McDonald on Saturday.
