China is known to be the fake capital of the world. Lots of counterfeit products from signature handbags, wallets, shoes, electronics to cosmetics, are exquisitely copied and made ten times cheaper than the original ones. However, tests show that these products are a threat to health.

Many incidents reported regarding counterfeit products coming from China causes danger to a person's health. According to Daily Mail, counterfeit leading brands like MAC, Benefit and Urban Decay have been found to have a harmful element such as mercury, lead, and cyanide.

Investigators already suspended 5,500 websites for selling fake luxury goods over the past 18 months. Senior detectives of the City of London Police too issued a national alert after they discovered more than 4,700 fake MAC products including foundation, bronzer, lip gloss and eye shadow in one of the shipping containers.

Moreover, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security also issued a similar national alert. It was prompted due to the discovery of beauty products from China to be positive for toxins. Likewise, U.S. also worries the effects of fake products in the economy. In 2010, it resulted in a retail loss to legitimate American Companies amounting $188 million.

Since fake products are very cheap compared to the genuine articles, customers are still buying counterfeit commodities. However, consumers still disregard, amidst awareness campaigns, that such products contain high levels of lead, arsenic, mercury, copper and cadmium.

Counterfeit makeup products made up of 19 times the legal limit of lead which causes memory loss, joint and muscle pains, headaches and sometimes death. Too much exposure of lead in pregnant women may promote the risk of miscarriage or premature birth. Also, mercury causes permanent damage to vision, heart, kidneys, immune system and lungs.

Human urine and rat poop likewise are found in counterfeit cosmetics from China that causes allergic reactions, bacterial infections, skin rashes and long-term damage include high blood pressure and infertility.

In the article published by Mashable, online shops, flea markets, eBay, Amazon and mall kiosks are making the fake products more accessible and demands are increasing each year. The U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime seized counterfeit goods almost 70% from 2008 to 2010 from China.

In 2014, China's e-commerce market surpasses U.S. and became the largest in the world with $296 billion. Internet giant Alibaba, an online shopping and online payment company, worries after the Chinese national government took a step to clean up the increasing gray market.

Hundreds of arrests are being done starting since 2014. However, experts say punishment for counterfeiters are still too vague that most are only getting fined instead of jail time.
