Headaches experienced by some after and during sex is considered normal and common. As some people are embarrassed to tell it to their doctors, experts reveal information, reason and treatment about the condition also known as coital cephalgia.

According to Mid-day, headaches experienced while before and after sex is also known as a rare form of a headache known as coital cephalgia or HAS, headaches associated with sexual activity. Experts also described the condition to appear in an estimated 1 percent of the population at any age which is more common in men than women.

Daily Mail, then mentioned that those severe sexual headaches falls into three types. As the first pain just goes something as heightened as sexual excitement also increases. The second is described to be a “sudden, severe, throbbing headache” that happens before or at the very moment of orgasm. While the last is said to be the pain that is experienced after sex.

“Headaches associated with sexual activity can be extremely painful and scary. They also can be very frustrating, both to the individual suffering the headache and to the partner,” Dr. José Biller, chair of the Department of Neurology at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine said. He then further explained that usual headaches are caused by a migraine or tension. On the other hand, some headaches could lead to life-threatening diseases like tumors or meningitis.

Furthermore, it was found out by researchers that coital cephalgia could be triggered due to sexual excitement, neck and face muscle contraction or general exertion. Some studies also said that birth control pills, certain drugs like amiodarone and cannabis were pointed to be linked to sexual headaches as reported.

Fortunately, Live Science mentioned that some of the treatment that a person experiencing coital cephalgia is to take Indomethacin (Indocin), a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. Ydrochloride (Inderal) and naratriptan (Amerge), Propranolol and triptans were also mentioned to treat the condition as well. Potential food cures are also said to be magnesium riched foods like avocado and whole grains.

Yet, amid that kind of treatment, doctors’ advice to seek medical attention first so that they could identify intracranial hemorrhage, cerebral infarction aneurysm, stroke and spinal disease before concluding that it’s just coital cephalgia.
