Population in the U.S was marked by an increase of some 2.4 million people this year, according to a report by the United States Census Bureau. The report showed that the rise in population was brought about by one per cent increase over the 2013 figures, and 3.7 per cent since 2010. Total U.S population has already reached 318.9 million this year.

US population is projected to stand at 320,090,857 on January 1, 2015, with one birth every eight seconds, and a death every 12 seconds in January, according to Census officials. Also, there will be one more person within every 33 seconds because of international migration. "The combination of births, deaths and net international migration increases the US population by one person every 16 seconds," the report said.

Meanwhile, California is reportedly the most populous American state with 38.8 million residents, followed by Texas with 27 million people, and Florida with 19.9 million. New York slipped from third place in 2013 to fourth this year, with 19.7 million residents. It has added 51,000 in its 2013 population.

North Dakota, Nevada and Texas had the fastest population growth rate.

On the other hand, some states that saw a drop in their population are Illinois with less 9,972 residents; West Virginia (minus 3,269), and Connecticut (minus by 2,664). Others with lower population include New Mexico, Alaska and Vermont.

The Census Bureau also projected the world population to increase to 7.2 billion (7,214,958,996) on January 1, 2015. This is 1.08 per cent or 77,381,246 higher compared to the same date in 2014.
