Prostate Cancer Treatment: Marijuana Suppositories May Cure Disease

Marijuana helps in treating prostate cancer says Tommy Chong, a Canadian comedian who claims to have used marijuana suppositories to cure his prostate cancer.

Chong was diagnosed with prostate cancer in June 2012. From then on, he has been using suppositories filled with hash oil to treat the disease, reports a video posted on Hashbar TV. The comedian reported that marijuana suppositories cured his disease completely and he is cancer-free for a couple of months now, according to Smell The Truth.       

In 1974, researchers from University of Virginia reported that tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabidiol inhibit a form of lung cancer. Hundreds of researches following the findings confirmed the anti-carcinogenic effects of cannabinoids, cannabichromene and cannabigerol, noted Medical Jane.

"In the practice of integrative oncology, the health care provider may recommend medicinal Cannabis not only for symptom management but also for its possible direct anti-tumor effect," National Cancer Institute (NCI) announced in March 2011. 

According to Medical Jane, NCI withdrew the announcement from its website in just a week following the opposition of many organisations about the statement.

Cannabinoids, active chemical present in marijuana, paved the way for two FDA approved medications and is also leading to the development of "new pharmaceuticals " for therapeutic purposes while eliminating the hazards of medical marijuana, reports National Institute Of Drug Abuse (NIH). 

Medical marijuana is the term used to refer to crude extract or whole unprocessed marijuana plant which used for therapy or treatment. Several states in the U.S. have already approved its usage under controlled medical terms.

NIH also noted that "Cannabinoids are a large family of chemicals related to delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), marijuana's main psychoactive (mind-altering) ingredient. Besides THC, the marijuana plant contains over 100 other cannabinoids. The body also produces its own cannabinoid chemicals (called endocannabinoids), which play a role in regulating pleasure, memory, thinking, concentration, movement, coordination, sensory and time perception, appetite, and pain".

Two chemicals with potential therapeutic properties -- the cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) -- are present in marijuana but in varying ratios. The CBD is referred to as non-psychoactive cannabinoid and is useful in controlling epileptic seizures, decreasing inflammation and pain, and rarely, in the treatment of addiction and psychosis. Though THC is observed to be of use in treating inflammation, pain and spasticity, it is predominantly used in stimulating appetite and reducing nausea.  

Medical Jane quoted that "Research funded by the National Institutes of Health is actively investigating the possible therapeutic uses of THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids to treat autoimmune diseases, cancer, inflammation, pain, seizures, substance use disorders, and other psychiatric disorders."
