Social media has paved the way for celebrities to further influence the masses, and everyone knows it isn't easy to build an audience. Recently, though, the reign over Instagram has been taken by pop singer and multi-hyphenate Taylor Swift, who now has 45.6 million followers, Billboard reports. She has surpassed Kim Kardashian, who recently stole the spot from another pop heavyweight, Beyonce.
Social media is basically free press, and celebrities are quick to use it to raise awareness on topics they feel passionate about, to stay in touch with their fans, or simple share tidbits of wisdom from their day to day activities.
Bubbly CEO Thomas Clayton wrote in the Huffington Post in 2013: "Celebrities are up on a pedestal for everyone to see, both making their impact much broader and their missteps far more consequential."
He also cited Swift as one of the celebrities who have maximized the use of rich multimedia. He wrote: "These days, celebrities are going beyond text updates and incorporating rich multimedia more often into their online presence. For example Taylor Swift is one of many celebrities that have held a Google + Hangout and interacted with fans using the service."

Swift is also known to be the head honcho of a girl squad consisting of models Karlie Kloss, Cara Delevingne, Kendall Jenner; actresses Emma Stone, Lena Dunham, Hailee Steinfeld and Jaime King; and singers Selena Gomez, Ellie Goulding, Lorde and HAIM. She told Vanity Fair, "My friends and I text every day. That’s 20 to 25 girls...Some of them are group texts, most of them are single texts. We know when everybody’s in New York, who’s in town, who’s in L.A. Being a huge group of girls who love each other, we know where everyone is. I've never had this before."
