'Android 6.0 Marshmallow' release date, features & download: 5 things you need to know

Android 6.0 Marshmallow is now currently available for download and here are the new and subtle features that come with this update.

According to Engadget, the Android 6.0 Marshmallow is already available for download in Google's Nexus phones. However, some manufacturers and carriers are yet to receive the update. A handful of companies such as HTC, Motorola, T-Mobile, Sony and Samsung are falling in line to give their users the latest Android update.

It was on Sept. 29 that Google confirmed the availablility of the Marshmallow to Nexus devices. The Android 6.0 comes with many features that gives the device its better and more efficient performance.

Here are 5 things you need to know about Android 6.0:

1.) Google Now on Tap

According to a post by the Wall Street Journal, the Marshmallow can predict what your next move is by suggesting the next move after your activity on the device making it more convenient for users.

"The service scans the on-screen text to suggest things you may want to do next," Joanna Stern of WSJ wrote. "For instance, in an email or text message that contains a time or location, it will prompt you to create a calendar appointment. Someone suggest a restaurant? It will automatically bring up a shortcut to the website, menu and maps."

2.) Predict useful apps

In the same post, Android can now suggest apps that you may find useful. Another subtle tweak is that apps can now be browsed through the app folder.

3.) Extends its own battery life

Motorola's blog listed this feature as a favorite. Simply put, Android will monitor your phone activity and when it's not being used, it will be put in sleep so that battery life can be saved substantially.

4.) Fingerprint support

According to Android Pit, Google is keen to standardize fingerprint scanning for Android phones and tablets. The company plans to use fingerprints to unlock phones or shop online.

5.) Auto Backup

In the same report, the Marshmallow will auto backup apps and settings with a file size of 25 MB and below.

According to HTC, the Marshmallow should be available on select HTC One, and Desire handsets including Butterfly 3 by the end of 2015.

Motorola isn't keen on doling out the update as fast as everyone else because they bank on their "high standards," according to the company in a blog post. The planned devices to get the upgrade are select Moto X, G, Maxx and Turbo smart phones.

As per Sony in a blog post, they're "working hard to bring this major update to as many of our devices as possible, as quickly." The Marshmallow will be available for select Xperia Z5, Z4, Z3, Z2, C5, C4 smart phones and tablets.
