It is quite confusing whether a person who is under a no-sugar diet is allowed to eat fruits or not. Some no-sugar diet tips say fruits can be incorporated into your diet while others say that it is not good to consume fruits when a person is trying to reduce his sugar intake.

According to Stuff, there are certain fruits that a person under a sugar-free diet can eat. On the other hand, there are also fruits that should be reduced or completely avoided. Know what fruits are high or low in sugar in order to successfully watch your diet.

Fruits High in Sugar

There is no doubt that apple and banana are among the healthiest fruits. They are even recommended to people who want to keep a healthy diet. However, it is no good for those who want to cut their sugar consumption. Why? It is because these fruits have very high sugar contents.

A single banana contains more or less 14 grams of sugar. On the other hand, an apple contains about 18 to 19 grams of sugar. Their sugar contents violate the "5 percent" rule recommended by several sugar-free gurus, including Sarah Wilson.

The "5-percent" rule suggests that a person under a sugar-free diet should only consume fruits that contain only five grams of sugar for every 100 grams.

Fruits Low in Sugar

Considering the "5 percent" rule and the list of fruits' sugar contents in New Health Guide, the best fruits to consume when a person is pulling a no-sugar diet are lime, lemon, strawberries, papaya, and watermelon. Other fruits that are low in sugar are coconut, blueberries, and kiwi fruit.

Lime contains the lowest sugar in the list. It only has 0.4 grams of sugar in every 85 grams. Papaya and watermelon are both tropical fruits that are mostly water. Thus, it is alright to consume them even when on a sugar-free diet.

No to Dried Fruit and Fruit Juice

According to I Quit Sugar, while a person can still eat fresh fruit even when reducing sugar consumption, it is strongly recommended to avoid dried fruit and fruit juice. Why? It is because these contain too much sugar - much higher than what you think.

Dried fruit also contains preservatives and it is no secret that preservatives are not good for the health. Fruit juice only takes the fruit's water for consumption—making it highly concentrated in sugar.
