'Game of Thrones' Season 6 Spoilers: New Season Will Feature Less Rape, Sansa's Wedding Night to 'Have Repercussions' [Report]

HBO's popular TV show "Game of Thrones" is filled with dread, terror, violence and bloody massacre. In fact, this is among the show's features that made fans like it. However, some are having second thoughts about the show after Sansa's rape.

According to Uproxx, many were disappointed with the way "Game of Thrones" writers and creators treated sexual assault on its main characters. Sansa's attack was the main reason many fans, even diehards, found themselves second-guessing the storytelling methods and its treatment for women.

Per Winter Is Coming, Jeremy Podeswa's first chance at directing "Game of Thrones" did not leave a good impression among viewers. He dropped out in Season 3 due to a family emergency and Episode 6 "Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken" was the worst of the season for most fans for several reasons from Dornish fizzling badly to the controversial decision of getting Sansa marry Ramsay Bolton.

The report stressed that in George RR Martin's book, where the film was adapted, Sansa never gets anywhere near Bolton. However, in the show, she married him and he raped her. Podeswa did not give opinions about the controversy and tried to sidestep it. However, he admitted that the reaction they received affected "Game of Thrones" season 6.

"It is important that (the producers) not self-censor. The show depicts a brutal world where horrible things happen. They did not want to be too overly influenced by that (criticism) but they did absorb and take it in and it did influence them in a way," he said.

"It was a difficult and brutal scene and we knew it was going to be challenging for the audience. But it was very important to us in the execution that it would not be exploited in any way. To be fair, the criticism was the notion of it, not the execution. It was handled as sensitively as it could possibly be; you hardly see anything."

Podeswa is responsible for the premiere episode and he revealed that the show worked hard for the opening to be different from the show's usual pattern. He disclosed that the first episode is "always a bit tricky because they tend to lay down a lot of tracks for the season and check on where the characters are now."

He explained that the first episode is not the most dynamic episodes and he is happy that the producers tried to work against that. He described that the premiere episode will give the season "an amazing start, stuff of consequence happens and the first two episodes are really strong."
