Jennifer Alderson, from Crook, County Durham in England, was mortified by what she found in the popcorn chicken meal she bought for her 5-year-old daughter Lydia at a KFC drive-through located at St. Helen Auckland Retail Park store, near Bishop Auckland on Dec. 20, wrote the Daily Mail.

Lydia noticed what appeared to be a maggot wedged in the kernel of her corn on the cob. "We drove away and pulled over in Aldi to eat our meals but when Lydia unwrapped it I was mortified," Alderson said. "I got myself a wrap and I could not eat it after that. I think it was dead—it was not moving."

A KFC staff explained to her that the corn on the cob came pre-packaged and frozen after she went back to the outlet. Alderson was given a full refund. She was pleased with how the store dealt with the matter but added that the fast food giant should do better with their inspection.

"We're really sorry for Jennifer's experience. Bishop Auckland received an 'excellent' five out of five score from the Environmental Health Office just last week, and we can confirm that this did not come from within the restaurant," says a spokesperson for KFC who also explained that the insect found was a corn borer or also known as a corn worm.

"It has been identified as a corn borer and unfortunately, on very rare occasions this can happen when dealing with natural produce. We have offered a full refund which was accepted in store and our customer care team have also been in touch."

Meanwhile, just almost a week ago, another KFC customer, Kira Bacon, 24, also found a maggot-like creature on her own corn on the cob meal she bought in Plymouth, Devon. A KFC spokesman told Express.co.uk that they regret the incident and said that their customer care team was already in touch.

Another similar incident earlier this year was also reported wherein a KFC diner named Wayne Mitchell from Ladywood, Birmingham believed he had found what he assumed was a maggot from the chicken meal he bought from the fast food's takeaway outlet in Oldbury, in the Black Country, BBC reported back in September.

Mitchell was told by KFC that they would look into the matter and conduct a testing on the reported contaminated meat. But, later on, the food company admitted that the meat was never tested after it was sent to them in June. Mitchell was told that the meat was already in such a bad state for the test to be conducted.

KFC admitted the lapse on their part saying that there was a breakdown in the escalation of the issue from the store to the customer care team and they will investigate it as a matter of utmost importance.
