Sex myths have been around for a long time. From whispered words between two middle school children at a private school for girls to bathroom graffiti at your first bar hop and the first time you have sex, there are some preconceived ideas about what is sex all about and how it should be. The media has portrayed it in various ways, but science is here to debunk myths that still linger in people's minds.

1. A single person can only judge a potential partner by their physical appearance. "Love at first sight" is a concept that is still being debated on to this day. Physical attraction can lead to a deeper attraction once two people get to know each other. However, Match.com's chief science adviser Helen Fisher told Buzzfeed that singles judge their potential first date by their grammar (88% of women and 75% of men), self-confidence (84% of women and 69% of men), and surprisingly, their teeth (81% of women and 67% of men). This may mean that apart from physical appearance, intelligence and hygiene are at the top of a person's list of dealbreakers.

2. You can get an idea about a man's penis size by his shoe size. This one is old but never gets old. FOX News reports that as per a Canadian study, there is a weak correlation between penis and shoe size, which means you'll definitely have to see it to believe it. Which leads us to...

3. Larger penis size means better satisfaction in bed. Women's Health reports that larger penises may actually be painful, especially if it hits the woman's cervix during sex. It also may cause pain if the vagina is not properly lubricated before penetration. If you find that your partner is not as well-endowed, however, try positions that bring you closer together, like missionary, and have him use a grinding instead of thrusting movement.

4. Men think of sex all the time and they want to have sex every day. FOX News reports that according to an Ohio State University study conducted on a group of 18 to 25-year-old men, the average man thought about sex about 19 times a day, not every 7 seconds as previously assumed. Additionally, Fisher says that only 24% of men would ideally want to have sex at least daily with a familiar partner.

5. Sex can replace exercise. Yes, kissing and having sex burns calories, but not as much as those burned by a proper workout. FOX News reports that on average, sex burns about 144 calories, so it's best not to skip that gym or soul cycle session if you want to keep fit and work those muscles.
