There are always two sides to a coin and the same goes for food: what the general public knows to be “bad” for the health actually has a “good” side too! Here's a list of five food items that are actually good for the health, despite what others say.

Chocolate

This one tops the list as the most-wanted yet highly discouraged due to the perceived amount of sugar and fat that it has. Chocolate has been widely studied for its health benefits, and some positive findings have been found, Live Strong reported.

Dark chocolate lowers the levels of “bad” LDL cholesterol in the body, reduces blood clots and is also associated with a better cognitive performance among the elderly. However, although dark chocolate does bring some health benefits, keep in mind that all kinds of chocolate contain a lot of calories so eat moderately.

Potatoes

Although potatoes are associated with the power to add some pounds to the consumer, a medium-sized potato only has 170 calories, along with what seems to be a good amount of potassium and fiber.

This starchy food item is also a good source of carbs, vitamin C, vitamin B-6 and folate, Woman's Day reported. As such, don't worry about consuming them. However, instead of frying like what is usually done in fast food restaurants, opt to bake or grill them as it's healthier to cook potatoes that way.

Red Meat

If you're confused whether red meat is healthy due to the fact that studies emphasizing the pros and cons of consuming it are bouncing left and right, the right amount of red meat is actually good for you, Alternet reported.

As is with many things, moderation is key with regards to the amount of red meat that you will eat. The right kind of meat matters too, so stick with extra lean ground sirloin, tenderloin, eye of round and flank steak. Meat from grass-fed cows also has lower amounts of saturated fat and higher amounts of omega-3 too.

Eggs

Eggs have been “wrongly accused” of being unhealthy because of the foods they're often served with, such as high-fat bacon and sausage. Eggs, including the yolks, are actually healthy and contain a good amount of protein, vitamin D, phosphorus, riboflavin, choline, and selenium.

Coffee

Last but not the least, good old coffee. Although it has been linked to a lack of sleep due to caffeine, coffee is linked with a reduced risks for dementia, diabetes and cancer.
