"Top Gun 2" is still happening and producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed that he's already talking with the film's star, Tom Cruise, about the sequel.

In a post on Twitter, Bruckheimer told his followers that he recently discussed the details of the follow-up movie in New Orleans with Cruise. Bruckheimer also shared the photo he had with the actor during their meeting, much to the delight of some followers who have been waiting for an update about the movie.

Variety reported on the plans for "Top Gun 2" back in July 2015 with Skydance studio confirming that it is indeed in development. But, since then, nothing has been heard from the project until Bruckheimer's post Wednesday.

Deadline reported that Bruckheimer and Cruise have been planning to do the sequel for more than three decades but plans never pushed through. The project was also affected by the death of Tony Scott, who was the director of the first installment.

It's still unclear who will be taking Scott's directorial chair when the sequel gets into production. However, one thing is for sure: "It's closer now to becoming real than it's been in 30 years," a source allegedly told Deadline.

In 2014, Bruckheimer shared that they had actually come up with a story idea for the sequel. "The concept is, basically, are the pilots obsolete because of drones. Cruise is going to show them that they're not obsolete. They're here to stay," the producer told The Huffington Post. However, much has happened since then and it's possible the story ideas have changed.

Zap2It reported that Cruise's co-star, Val Kilmer, was offered to reprise his role and he agreed to be part of "Top Gun 2." Kilmer played Iceman next to Cruise's Maverick. They were United States Naval Aviator competing for the top spot at the flying school. However, their duties as American military men bonded them together to successfully complete a mission.

"Top Gun" debuted in theaters in 1986 in the number one spot at the box office, per Box Office Mojo. The movie launched the career of Cruise as one of Hollywood's rising stars. It also starred Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards, Tim Robbins and Meg Ryan. It's still not known whether the stars would be asked to return for the sequel.
