The celebrity doctor and health expert Dr. Mehmet Oz believe that one of the best ways to achieve weight loss and rev up one's metabolism is to make sure that the thyroid functioning has not gone awry.

"Without enough thyroid hormone, every system in the body slows down. Those who suffer from hypothyroidism feel tired and tend to sleep a lot," according to the Dr. Oz Show website.

"Their digestion is slow and weight gain typically occurs. They can also experience extremely dry skin, hair loss, and slowed thinking. In fact without enough thyroid hormone, attaining your perfect weight is almost impossible."

Some of the other signs and symptoms to watch out for that could point to an underactive thyroid disease include intolerance for the cold, brittle hair, splitting nails, heavy menstrual bleeding, poor memory, depression, constipation and unexplained fatigue or lethargy.

The thyroid is a gland found in the neck and is shaped like a butterfly. It secretes different hormones that could influence metabolism, growth and development, and body temperature, says WebMD.

In order to help boost thyroid functioning, Dr. Oz stressed the importance of eating foods rich in minerals like zinc, selenium and iodine. These include foods, such as Brazil nuts, sunflower seeds, dulse flakes and miso soup.

He also said that proper thyroid function could be achieved by getting enough vitamin D from foods like salmon, eggs yolks, cheese, sardines, and beef liver. One is also advised to get enough sunlight exposure.

Dr. Oz also recommends some of the best fat-burning supplements that help in curbing one's appetite and in providing that feeling of full, according to Celebrity Health and Fitness. These supplements include:

Konjac root powder

The powder is derived from the Konjac root, which is also referred to as glucomannan. Apart from its fat-burning properties, it also gives you that feeling of being full that could help avoid eating too much. It could also benefit people suffering from the diabetes disease because it also helps regulate the blood sugar levels.

Chromium

This mineral could aid in weight loss because it balances the blood sugar and regulate insulin. According to Dr. Oz, "If you balance blood sugar, the weight loss is automatic."

Some of the benefits of taking in probiotic lactobacillus gasseri include improved metabolism, burning of the fats around the belly and prevention of the production of fats. It also helps lower the case of inflammation in the body, says Dr. Oz.
