Vitamin D can successfully treat or lessen the symptoms of psoriasis, good news for Psoriasis patients. Nicknamed as "sunshine vitamin," vitamin D is mainly obtained from direct sunlight and food.

Psoriasis is a skin disorder in which skin becomes scaly and dry. This happens due to excessive generation of skin cells. Psoriasis is an autoimmune inflammatory skin disease which results from many different factors like environment, genetics, social and dietary habits, lack of immunity, deficiency of vitamins A, B, and D etc.

Vitamin D has two main reasons to make it an effective remedy for psoriasis according to Richard Gallo, M.D. the professor of medicine and pediatrics and chief of the dermatology division at the University of California-San Diego.

Dr. Gallo explains that Vitamin D changes the way the cells grow in the body. It slows down the growth of cells and that is where it contributes in thinning the plaque on the skin and less scaly.

The second reason is vitamin D strengthens the immune system and makes it more effective. And since psoriasis is an autoimmune disease, a body's increased immune system creates balance in the body and decreases the symptoms.

The American Academy of Dermatology persistently recommends getting vitamin D from nutritional sources as well as the dietary supplements. Unprotected Ultra Violet radiation from the sun r from indoor tanning resources is a well-known risk factor for skin cancer according to Psoriasis.org

Topical treatments like Dovonex which is famous for psoriasis treatment is included with an active form of vitamin D which is different than vitamin D found in the sunlight and dietary supplements.

The Lower level of vitamin D is one of the reasons why psoriasis starts. As vitamin D's main source is sunlight, the people living in high altitude where the sun is little, suffer from it from writes Citizen Research.

Though vitamin D is converted to its active form in our body by kidneys and liver but applying it on the skin in active form is a direct way to supply vitamin D to the skin to cure psoriasis.
