'Eat the Purple', 2017's New Food Trend

'Eat The Rainbow', this phrase is familiar to the people who adopt a healthy lifestyle, especially a food matter. "Eat The Rainbow" is a simple way to tell people to do not picky in eating food. Eating different colors of food (vegetables and fruits) is one method to get as many of those vitamins and minerals as possible.

In 2017, Whole Foods Market informed that there are top 10 trends for the next year. One of them is, "Purple Power, Richly colored purple foods are popping up everywhere: purple cauliflower, black rice, purple asparagus, elderberries, acai, purple sweet potatoes, purple corn, and cereal. The power of purple goes beyond the vibrant color and often indicates nutrient density and antioxidants.". Examples of the fast-growing trend are Roots Purple Corn Cereal, Jackson's Honest Purple Heirloom Potato Chips, Que Pasa Purple Corn Tortilla Chips, Love Beets and Stokes Purple Sweet Potatoes

Doctor Oz explained, "purple foods contain anthocyanins, which are health-promoting chemicals that help protect cells and heal the body". Anthocyanins play active roles in promoting eye and heart health, decreasing cancer cell proliferation and more.

Meanwhile in Chatelaine, reported that the darker the food, the higher the antioxidant level, as its scientifically-proven fact. Antioxidants prevent us from free radicals, which make us keep looking younger. The purple color in a food contains flavonoids, including resveratrol, which can help relax the arterial walls, decrease blood pressure in the arteries and allows better circulation. Resveratrol which can be found in purple grapes, cranberries, blueberries, also has the ability to kill cancer.

People who ate purple fruit and vegetables regularly often had a reduced risk of getting high blood pressure and low cholesterol, as the result of the study has been conducted by National Center for Health Statistic.
