'Sherlock' the BBC TV series is scheduled to release its 4th season on January 1 2016, as per the online PBS schedule. But much to the disappointment of its fans, its creators have hinted that this could very well be the last season of the beloved series. Fans of the series might not get a 5th season.

According to the Express, Mark Gatiss, (co-creator) reportedly expressed his keenness to shoot further seasons but the scheduling problems of the cast are proving to be a major obstacle.

Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Sherlock Holmes in the series, is involved in many other projects since bagging the lead role in Marvel's Doctor Strange. Cumberbatch has become a megastar owing to a thriving fan base worldwide. He is also slated to voice the title character in the 2018 film, 'How The Grinch Stole Christmas'.

Martin Freeman who plays Sherlock's sidekick, Dr. John Watson, is scheduled to star in Cargo (a 2017 film) according to his Wikipedia page. Martin Freeman gained major popularity from his role as John Watson and then has coincidently gone on to work in Marvel's Captain America: Civil War.  Going by this trend, seeing Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch together in the 'Marvel Cinematic Universe' is more of a possibility than the 5th installment of 'Sherlock'.

Steven Moffat, co-creator of Sherlock, also has other commitments including a 'Doctor Who' project - as reported by 'The Guardian'.

The future of the 5th season of 'Sherlock' looks bleak at best. But whatever the future holds, the journey of the past 3 seasons has been an amazing roller coaster ride. Fans worldwide await the 4th and possibly final season with excitement. After the 4th season, the series might end but Sherlock Holmes won't.

To steal the words of fiction's most famous detective, the game will always be afoot.
