In ear cleaning ritual cotton swabs are a common sight. Despite most people trusting the swabs, doctors believe it is not as good as it seems.

Based on the medical journal "Otalaryngology - Head and Neck surgery" CNN reports that the experts in this field have voiced their concern against usage of cotton swabs for removing ear wax. In fact they have said anything lesser in structure than the human elbow should not be allowed to be put into the ears.

The journal authors have set up an advisory panel of the American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery that even consists of a consumer representative to discuss the ill effect of what is considered to be a rather innocent tool for ear hygiene.

The panel believes things like cotton swabs, hair pin, house keys, toothpicks can cause bruises in the ear canal, puncture the eardrum and dismantle bones which may eventually lead to complete or partial loss of hearing, dizziness, ringing or several other symptoms of ear injury.

Production of ear wax is important for our ears protection, lubrication and cleanliness as it keeps the delicate internal parts safe from dust and dirt particles. The natural formation of skin within the canal along with jaw movements like talking and chewing are capable enough to move the earwax outside which is eventually washed off during bathing.

As presented by Dr. Seth Schwartz, chairman of the guideline update group for the academy, last the guideline was updated way back in 2008. "The process has become a little more transparent in the way we actually write the guidelines now. We are more clear about why the decisions we made are made and what data there is to support it." Dr. Seth explained.

According to the Cosmopolitan while it is tempting for most people to use swabs for cleaning the ears, they should be wary of its potential damages. Reports warn the usage of ear candles to counter wax buildup and urges people to consult doctors immediately if confronted by ear fullness or any kind of ear pain.

It is safe to conclude that the apparently harmless cotton buds are best kept away from the ears as nature has its own hygiene routine when required.
