Janet Jackson has become the most famous symbol of the growing trend of becoming a mother at the age of 50.

The 50-year-old star and her husband Wissam Al Mana welcomed their first child, a baby boy, into the world on January 3. The baby boy had been named Eissa Al Mana. Eissa comes from Hebrew and means 'God is salvation' in Arabic, reports Mirror.

"Janet Jackson and husband Wissam Al Mana are thrilled to welcome their new son Eissa Al Mana into the world," her spokesperson confirmed.

In April last year, the popstar had announced to her fans in a video that she will be delaying the second leg of her 'Unbreakable' world tour as she and her husband were focused on planning a family, reports CNN.

"I thought it was important that you be the first to know. My husband and I are planning our family, so I'm going to have to delay the tour," she had said with a smile.

Back then, there was no information on how Jackson and her husband were planning a family, whether through conceiving naturally, fertility treatment, surrogacy or adoption.

With the birth of her first child at the age of 50, Jackson has followed the footsteps of singer Sophie B.Hawkins, who already had a young son when she decided to have another baby at 50.

There's a small but growing trend of women like Jackson and Hawkins who are becoming mothers at 50 and beyond and doing what was practically unthinkable a few decades ago,

In 2013, an average of 13 children were born every week to mothers 50 and older, according to a story in the AARP The Magazine.

Now the notion of delivering babies after 50 is not as inconceivable as it once seemed. Rajo Devi from India is the oldest woman recorded to give birth to her first child at the age of 70.
