In layman term, Ozone Layer protects Harmful UV rays by filtering the sun rays and only 'good' rays reach the earth. Ozone Layer started depleting many years ago due to increase in pollution and global warming which made few holes in the layer triggering catastrophic circumstances. But it's official now, Ozone Layer is healing.

Ozone holes that are holes formed in the Ozone Layer are due to a chemical reaction between chlorine and bromine. Holes in the Ozone layer allows more UV radiation to reach earth surface thereby damaging the DNA which can further aggravate to Skin Cancer and other life threatening diseases. Earlier, use of Chlorofluorocarbons, a compound made up of Chlorine, Fluorine, and Carbon to use in refrigerators, air conditions, and other such products which resulted in holes in the ozone layer. After the Montreal Protocol, use of CFCs in any product was banned.

According to a report published in Science News, Susan Solomon and her team of researchers at MIT have been measuring ozone shrinkage and other phenomenon that leads to ozone depletion and found out that between 2000 and 2015, the ozone layer has shrunk mostly in September with the statistics of 4.5 million square kilometers to almost 1 million square kilometers.

Susan stated that the Ozone Hole is healing after an extensive research of 30 years. The research on Ozone Layer started back in 1979 and the data is being collected with the help of weather balloons over Antarctica. Further, back in 1989 when CFC was phased out in an International Treaty i.e. Montreal Protocol, CFC turned out to be a harmful greenhouse gasses which led to global warming by aggravating it.

ABC Online stated the key point of the research as per which, the ozone layer depletion depends on the various natural phenomenon. A volcanic eruption that occurred last year created a huge hole in the ozone layer, however, as per the recent research findings, it can be assured that the ozone is in better form now and at an average 17 million square kilometers area worth of holes are remaining to subside after 30 years of commencing the research.

Dr. Olaf Morgenstern of NIWA said "This new research is consistent. With model projections which indicate a gradual healing of the ozone hole and its disappearance in the second half of this century" thereby concluding that the ozone might fully repair itself by the second half of this century with the consistent pace of mending.
