None of the "Shadowhunters" Season 2 spoilers guessed the surprise the second season brought to the series' shocked audiences. In Episode 4, fans were devastated when Clary's mother Jocelyn met an untimely death at the hands of a demon.

The shock was partly because the episode veered away from its source material, Cassandra Clare's "The Mortal Instruments" novel series. In addition, it feels like a very premature death. Jocelyn was largely absent in the first season after being kidnapped. And now that she is back safe and sound, most fans were hopeful that mother and daughter could bond a little more in "Shadowhunters" Season 2. But that is not to happen anymore.

However, there is a reason why Jocelyn was killed in "Shadowhunters" Season 2. According to showrunner Katherine McNamara, killing Clary's mother is a painful but necessary step in her evolution as a shadowhunter reports TV Guide. In addition, veering away from the source material is one way to make the show exciting even to fans that are well-versed with Cassandra Clare's novels.

For fans anxious to know what the upcoming episode could bring, a "Shadowhunters" Season 2 episode 5 trailer has already been released, giving hints of what Clary will attempt to do in the wake of her mother's death. In the brief trailer, Clary is seen resorting to questionable magic just to bring her mother back to life.

Of course well-meaning friends will try to reason with Clary to stop her from dealing with forces she might not be able to control. In fact, the "Shadowhunters" Season 2 episode 5 promo shows Jace opposing the resurrection idea explaining that he heard stories about such attempts going awry.

But it appears that Clary will go ahead with it anyway despite Jace's warnings that it is uncertain what exactly Clary could be bringing back. The "Shadowhunters" Season 2 episode 5 trailer then shows a terrifying creature, which is most likely the result of Clary's experiment.
