It was supposed to be the era of Djokovic and Murray but the old greats dominated the biggest stage in the recently concluded Australian Open. Roger Federer outlasted tennis rival Rafael Nadal in an epic five set match to win his fifth Australian Open title.

Roger Federer's win in Australia is his 18th grand slam title. Federer also made history as he becomes the oldest man (35) to win a tennis majors since 1972.

It was a match built for the ages, Federer and Nadal have been fighting it out in the tennis court even before this generation's top guns turned professionals. Nadal is still up in their win-loss tally but it does not take away anything from Federer's Australian Open win.

Federer's last major title was way back 2012. The last time he defeated Nadal in a Grand Slam final was in 2007. These just made the win extra sweet for the Swiss tennis great.

Federer, in the presentation ceremony, addressed the crowd on Rod Laver Arena. "I hope to see you next year", said the Swiss tennis great, "If not, it was a wonderful run here and I can't be more happy to have won tonight".

The "if not" words from Federer drew speculations that he may already be hinting of his retirement. A lot of fans believe that it would be great to see the tennis idol go out of the sports while he is on top.

Federer immediately dismissed the retirement speculation by saying that he does hope to be back next year. He even stated that he is eyeing Wimbledon for this 19th major title.

With the 18 majors, Federer has four more than second placers Nadal and Pete Sampras who both have 14. However, it looks like the 18th he got from the Australian Open is not enough for Roger Federer as he is now looking for 19th in Roland Garros.
