Breastfeeding is a natural, highly recommended and most valuable part of motherhood. In line with this, it is important for breastfeeding moms to know how to take care not only of their newborns but of themselves as well. Also, it is necessary for mothers-to-be to know different things associated with breastfeeding.

As reported in Health & Mind Care, there are several changes that happen to women during pregnancy, and this is visible most especially in its physical aspect. One of which is the change that gets an expectant mother ready to take care of her child through breastfeeding. Prior to delivery, the nipples produces a yellowish substance that will, later on, develop to milk.

Colostrum is the "first milk" that comes out of the nipple and is considered as highly nutritious since it is rich in vitamins and minerals. This is the reason why most hospitals take breastfeeding as mandatory after delivery. This milk, rather than white in color, is pale and thick in consistency.

It is also important for breastfeeding moms to know the proper position while breastfeeding. Primarily, the baby should be secured properly in the mother's lap, while being supported with the mother's hand. This is also to create the so-called "good latch". According to Fit Pregnancy, a good latch avoids any discomfort between the mother and the baby. This prevents further pain experienced in the nipple area of the mom while the baby is properly sucking the milk.

Furthermore, it is important for the little one to stay awake while being nursed. Babies are often very sleepy, however, once the little one falls asleep easily, he/she won't be able to do his/her job of drinking the colostrum, thus making the breast unable to produce more milk. Nevertheless, it is important to seek help in any case such as the sore nipple, poor latch and milk production, and to know more about proper breastfeeding.
