Taylor Swift publicly announced on her Tumblr page that her mother, Andrea, has been diagnosed with cancer.

In her blog post, Swift said that for one of her Christmas gifts this year, she asked her mother to go book an appointment to get screened for any health issue. Her mother went to the doctor to get checked and was found to have no issues at that time.

"The results came in, and I'm saddened to tell you that my mom has been diagnosed with cancer. I'd like to keep the details of her condition and treatment plans private, but she wanted you to know," the singer wrote.

Andrea Finlay, the 57-year-old mom of the singer, is a regular participant of Swift's music videos and tours. She quit her mutual fund marketing executive job a few years ago to raise Swift and Swift's younger brother, Austin, according to CNN.

Swift said it was her mother's idea to announce her diagnosis as a way to encourage fans to remind their own parents to get screened for possible health concerns.

"She wanted you to know because your parents may be too busy juggling everything they've got going on to go to the doctor, and maybe you reminding them to go get checked for cancer could possibly lead to an early diagnosis and an easier battle."

"Or peace of mind in knowing that they're healthy and there's nothing to worry about."

The pop star also added that her mom would not be able to go on many shows on her upcoming tour because "she's got an important battle to fight."

Within 90 minutes of Swift's tweets about her mom's condition, #PrayForMamaSwift became a trending hashtag last Thursday on Twitter with the singer's fans offering prayers and encouragement. Swift's tweet had been retweeted almost 60,000 times at the time of this writing.

Swift is very close with her mother, according to ET Online. She wrote the song "Best Day" for her mom in 2008.

Swift has always been forthright with her fans through her active social media presence and by always sharing big events in her life. The singer's fans shared, "there's something in your eyes that says we can beat this," a line from Swift's song in 2008, titled "Change."

The "Blank Space" star ended her Tumblr post with, "Thank you for caring about my family so much that she would want me to share this information with you. I hope and pray that you never get news like this."
