A sequel for "Top Gun" is confirmed to be in the works and that Tom Cruise is slated to reprise his role as its main star.

Almost after 30 years, "Top Gun 2" is finally in the works as Skydance CEO David Ellison spoke about the project during an interview with Collider, according to Flickering Myth.

"Justin Marks is writing the screenplay right now," Ellison confirmed with The Daily Mail. "He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy has turned into today."

Ellison shared potential synopsis for the movie, saying that the plot will revolve in the current era today, with drone technology and fifth generation fighters.

The concept will be about drones replacing pilots but with the main character proving that pilots are not yet outdated, he said.

Tom Cruise will be reprising his role as Maverick, and will be featured again as the key player in the new movie.

"There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie, and there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick," Ellison added.

According to Ellison, the sequel would have a more interesting and updated take on the military world compared to the original movie.

He revealed that they are keen to explore the "end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots" and today's culture for the movie.

Ellison added that the movie should be in practical 3D and in IMAX because Cruise is sure to want to be in the set of the airplanes.

It is unclear whether Kelly McGillis or Val Kilmer will return alongside with Cruise.

The sequel for the original movie has been in the pipelines for a long time. Jerry Bruckheimer, the co-producer for the first film, announced last year that they were almost finished developing it.

The "Top Gun" sequel news was greenlighted over five years ago when the original director, the late Tony Scott, was inspired to shoot the film as he met a young airforce pilot. According to the Guardian, Scott was fascinated by unmanned drones.

"These computer geeks - these kids play war games in a trailer in Fallon, Nevada and if we ever went to war or were in the Middle East or the Far East or wherever it is, these guys can actually fly drones. They are unmanned aircraft. They operate them and then they party all night," Scott told Hitfix.
