Jessica Alba Under Fire as The Honest Company Fails to Protect Public from Sunburn

The Honest Co. is the family brand that Jessica Alba and her husband, Christopher Gavigan, put up to provide the public with nontoxic, eco-friendly and affordable baby and home products. It has been a huge success since its launch in 2011 and has been reported to be worth $1 billion as of November 2014. However, the company and its owners were under fire last Friday as several customers claimed that the brand's sunscreen lotion doesn't actually protect the skin from the sun.

According to Today, several customers have been posting their disappointment and dissatisfaction online due to serious sunburns they and their children have sustained after putting on Honest Sunscreen Lotion, a product that supposedly has an SPF 30 ultraviolet rays protection.

Twitter user Rochelle Lynn told The Honest Co. that they will never use the brand's sunscreen again after her daughter has suffered from sunburn.

Twitter user Lindsy Marshall tweeted: "Don't buy @Honest sunscreen unless u want to look like this. Second time I've tried this stuff and got fried."

The Honest Co. has released a statement in response to the online tirade, stating that their sunscreen lotion has been tested by using the prescribed US Food and Drug Administration's monograph and protocols. The findings have been found effective and safe for use. The company also said they are standing behind the safety and efficacy of their sunscreen as the number of complaints is just less than half of one percent of all sunscreen lotions sold.

NY Daily News adds that an investigation has already been conducted by NBC Chicago, and they have found out that the company has reduced the zinc content of the lotion to 9.3 percent, which is below the 18 to 25 percent found in usual sunscreens.

According to EWG's Guide to Sunscreens, zinc oxide can provide strong sun protection and doesn't let sunscreen to breakdown in the sun. EWG believes that the large particles of the zinc oxide make it unable to penetrate the skin and less likely to affect the body. The organization also said that problems only arise if the zinc oxide content is incomplete.

Currently, the product is "out of stock" on the company's website and have been removed out of other stores like Target, but the company is stating they are not pulling out the product just yet.
