It looks like England will have a new tourist attraction as archeologists uncovered a bigger set of monumental stones buried deep underground from the famous Stonehenge area. Furthermore, the experts are claiming it may be older than the Stonehenge and could have been used as a ritual arena during its hey day.

The Inquisitr reports that the 4500-year-old "Superhenge" was discovered two miles away from where the Stonehenge is located. There are 30 stones in the East which measures 4.5 x 1.5 x 1 meters while the massive foundation pits are enclosed with timber circles. A total of 90 upright stones has been uncovered, which demonstrates an early rendition of monumental architecture and raises the significance of the Stonehenge landscape. However, like the well-known stone formation, the archeologists have no idea as to who or what has made the stone structure.

CNN reports that according to Professor Wolfgang Neubauer, the director of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Archeological Prospection and Virtual Archaeology, the discovery of the "Superhenge" was made possible by their high-resolution radar which penetrated beneath the Durrington Walls. The team notes that the largest rock monument may have been made during the early Neolithic period and although there are no other pertinent details available, Paul Garwood, the lead historian and archeologist of the Stonehenge Hidden Landscape Project, believes it can change the way experts see and understand how or why the Stonehenge was built.

Vince Gaffney, lead researcher from the University of Bradford, said the team thinks there is nothing else like the "Superhenge" around the world, Quartz writes. What more, they believe these stones have been deliberately toppled over for preservation purposes or maybe, the burying of the stones could be somehow connected to a religious revolution.

The stones are perfectly aligned with the sunrise, which means it could be a temple for a sun cult or a burial ground. Unfortunately, as there are no records left for the archeologists or experts to study, the Stonehenge and "Superhenge" will remain a mystery unless something new comes up. It will, however, change the way the Stonehenge is understood and could possibly lead to the rewriting of previous facts and information documented about it.
