Farting Time: What Causes Flatulence During Workout And How To Avoid It

Working out de-stresses both the mind and body and although it sounds everything but good, sometimes it leads to a funny effect such as farting. This may be a natural body reaction but still, it's nothing but embarrassing especially if it happens in the gym. Nevertheless, here's why it happens and what one can do about it while doing an exercise routine in public.

There are several reasons why there is a workout-induced flatulence and primarily, it is because of the heavy breathing associated with it. "This excess air gets trapped in the digestive tract, only to be released through the anus", Dr. Niket Sonpal, the assistant clinical professor of Touro College of Osteopathic in New York City explained.

Another reason, as Women's Health reported us because of the sweat session that increases the process of digestion. This is because of exercises such as aerobic transport food faster through the digestive process. This causes the release of gas, a.k.a. fart, that was caught in the digestive tract. Unfortunately, other anaerobic exercises won;t do any good as well. This means that even strength training will squeeze the colon too, causing the air to be pushed outside.

While nothing can really be done to prevent self from farting, there are still ways to at least make it less unfavorable. One thing is to avoid eating gas-producing food and drinks s prior to working out such as corn, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, potatoes and carbonated water. Meanwhile, Health24 suggests avoiding fatty foods before exercising like pastries, chips, fried foods, and chocolates.

It is also advised to breathe on through the nose and out through the mouth. And once the forbidden gas slips, don't forget the general gym etiquette by saying "excuse me" and move on from that. After all, it happens to everyone once in a while.
