Recent updates have revealed that two Anyang Herbal weight loss products have been found to contain very high levels of a banned substance known as sibutramine. However, these products were tagged as containing 100 percent natural ingredients, according to the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) on Monday, March 6.

The products called, Anyang Herbal Blue and Anyang Herbal Red were mostly sold online and through direct selling, but the HSA has warned the public to refrain from purchasing or consuming these Anyang Herbal weight loss products.

Although the banned substance found in these Anyang Herbal weight loss products - Sibutramine was previously available when necessary as a prescription-only weight loss drug, in 2010, it was banned in Singapore due to adverse effects. The adverse effects of the substance include increased risks of heart attacks, stroke, and other critical condition. It is also reported by the agency that other side effects of the sibutramine include irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, hallucinations and mood swings.

The manufacturers of the Anyang Herbal weight loss product have also noted that Anyang Herbal Blue was designed in such a way as not to have any side effects. But, this was found not to be true as a female consumer of the product, who is in her late 20s is reported to have complained of serious symptoms including heart palpitations, trembling of hands and legs, insomnia, nausea, sweating, and hallucinations.

In addition, another of the company's Anyang Herbal weight loss product, Anyang Herbal Red was also found by the agency to contain undeclared potent Western medicines including diclofenac and phenolphthalein, as well as sibutramine. The agency stated that diclofenac is a potent painkiller, which has the potentials to cause serious gastric bleeding, heart attacks, and strokes, according to Singaporeheadlines.

Meanwhile, HSA noted that phenolphthalein, on the other hand, was commonly used as a laxative in the past, but, has the tendency to cause rashes, breathing difficulties, abdominal cramps, and kidney disorders. Phenolphthalein has also been found to be associated with cancer in various animal studies.

However, investigations carried out have already revealed that the seller of these dangerous Anyang Herbal weight loss products was Jessie Cosmetics. The investigations also revealed that the products were mostly sold on a social media platform and directly to the seller's friends.

But, authorities have ordered Jessie Cosmetics to discontinue the sales of the Anyang Herbal weight loss products. It is reported that the seller is currently assisting in HAS in making further investigations into the product. HSA also revealed to Channel NewsAsia that it is working with its overseas counterparts to remove the affected posting.

The agency has noted that anyone who sells or supplies illegal health products such as the Anyang Herbal weight loss is liable to prosecution. In the case such person or persons are convicted, then he may face imprisonment for up to three years, or fined up to S$100,000 or even both.
