Sam Smith has maintained his weight loss for more than a year through Paleo-style diet and exercise.

Smith documented his weight loss on his Instagram account. According to Celebrity Health Fitness, the singer has lost and maintained his 50-pound weight loss by eating low carb Paleo meals and by working out. He reportedly credits the book "Eat Nourish Glow" by nutritionist Amelia Freer for helping him eat better.

Smith said he's not paid to endorse the British nutritionist's book. According to Smith, meeting Freer "changed his life." He stated in March of last year that the book helped him shed the pounds quickly as well as improve his health.

"Amelia Freer has helped me lose over a stone [14 pounds] in two weeks and has completely transformed my relationship with food," he said, as reported by Examiner.

Freer's book focuses on a gluten-free Paleo-style diet which includes high-quality animal proteins, non-starchy vegetables, legumes, and health fats. Some foods that are encouraged are organic foods such as eggs, free-range chicken and vegetables. The diet restricts processed foods, sugar, grains, alcohol and dairy.

According to Freer, her eating principles are about having a better food philosophy and relationship with food and not entirely about weight loss.

In an interview with Telegraph, Freer explained that dieting is not simply about "eating less and moving more" as there are other factors to consider.

"First, a calorie is the amount of energy needed to heat a kilogram of water by 1 degree C," she explained. "The calories labelled on packaging are measured by capturing the heat produced when test samples of that particular food are burned, but this is not done for every item of food, so despite manufacturer's best efforts there can still be variation between what measured in the lab and the item you're eating. Calorie labels can't always accurately reflect what we're eating or how much energy we're absorbing from the food."

She adds that most diet plans are a "one-size-fits-all" type of approach which shouldn't be since everybody is unique. Our bodies are inherently different not just by age, sleep quality, physical activity and hormones but by other factors as well. She explains that a healthy diet for a healthy body should be a long-term habit and not just a short-term solution.

Freer has also worked with Boy George and James Corden who both credited her for their weight loss as well.
