All around the world, millions of people struggle with their weight. Every year, people make resolutions to lose those extra pounds.

However, it is not always easy. According to CNN, over one-third of the world's adults and 17 percent of the world's children are obese.

There is still hope for those who are obese though, as the weight can be lost with proper diet and exercise. This can be seen on TV shows like "Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition."

For those who do not have the luxury to be a contestant on such shows, here are some tips on how to lose 100 pounds safely and permanently.

The first thing to know is that losing weight must be planned. According to WebMD, there are thousands of plans that someone can use to lose weight. Finding the correct plan for one's body and mindset is a difficult thing to do.

Once one finds the right plan for him or her, it is important that the plan is adhered to or else it will ultimately fail.

Next is that one must set reasonable goals. Shape reports that one of the biggest mistakes people who are trying to lose weight make is trying to lose too much too fast. By doing this, they set themselves up for failure.

Instead, try and set attainable goals. For example, instead of trying to lose 30 pounds in a month, a more reasonable goal would be something like 15 - 20 pounds.

Another important tip is purchasing the right food. One of the reasons people get into the state they are in is eating food that is not healthy or has too many calories.

WebMD reports that to lose weight and keep the body in a healthy state, one must have at least 1700 calories per day. Anything less than that and the body will start to go into a starvation state.

Next is finding the right exercise program that is the most suitable for one's body.

Everyone is different and what works for one might not work for someone else. While running and doing vast amount of cardio is considered the best way to lose weight, alternative methods also work such as swimming.

Lastly, find a support system.

Losing weight is never easy and it is always tempting to fall off the wagon from time to time. By finding people who can support or even join the weight loss program, it's harder to fall to those temptations.
